While looking for information on the recent survey showing how knowledgable people are about current events as it specifically relates to the Daily Show, I came across this. Julia R. Fox, an assistant professor of telecommunications at the university, showed in her study, "No Joke: A Comparison of Substance in The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Broadcast Network Television Coverage of the 2004 Presidential Election Campaign" (to be published in the summer of 2007), that when it comes to substance, there is little difference between the Daily Show and other news outlets. By using coverage and footage of the 2004 Presidential Election, she analyzes and compares both communication media. What she found was that neither actually offers more, since both programs are more focused on the nature of " infotainment" and ratings, making them both "equal" in content. Note: This is from wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt.
I have decided to change how I do these science/politics posts. It tends to be time consuming to gather the links to research for my science posts and I am only knowledgeable on a limited set of topics and know where to easily obtain the information on those topics. So, instead I am going to link to sources of information on scientific topics and some political topics hat I have enjoyed or thought were informative and instead devote the rest of my post to making arguments on politics, policy, and/or morality. That way I don’t have to spend so much time hunting down the actual research especially when most people can do that themselves if so inclined.
